Fischer Homes Joins HomeAid Care Day

Building industry volunteers create new facility at The Drake House

Atlanta – May 16, 2023 – Fischer Homes employees and trade partners joined nonprofit HomeAid Atlanta for a HomeAid Care Day on May 5 at The Drake House in Roswell.  HomeAid Care Days are workdays led by volunteers to complete facility upgrades and repairs at metro Atlanta organizations providing housing and services for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The Drake House has a mission to empower women and their children experiencing homelessness to achieve economic independence and long-term stability.

The May 5 Care Day focused on transforming a former daycare center on The Drake House campus into what will become The Drake Marketplace. Approximately 30 Fischer Homes volunteers painted the building's entire interior, installed new doors throughout, demolished an old ramp and rebuilt it for ADA compliance, made improvements to the entrance, and much more. The Drake Marketplace will allow a much-needed expanded food pantry “shopping” experience for The Drake House clients, as well as expanded laundry facilities.

Thanks to these Fischer Homes trade partners for providing support for the HomeAid Care Day:

Timberlake Cabinetry donated and installed new cabinets and shelves throughout the building.

The work performed by Care Day volunteers, along with donations of materials, provided a construction cost savings of nearly $20,000 for The Drake House. These savings allow The Drake House to preserve funds to directly help the women who call it home, like Alexis.

Alexis and her special needs teenage son were living in their car when they could not afford a hotel after being evicted from two different apartments. Though Alexis had income from child support and SSI for the special needs of her child, she was unable to secure employment. She had relocated seeking educational opportunities for her son, and he was now thriving in a public high school. Upon moving into The Drake House, Alexis secured full-time employment and began rigorously saving her income. She participated in a matched savings program sponsored by United Way to pay off utility bills and negotiate settlements with both landlords for payoffs of rental debt. Alexis regained independence and found housing for her and her son. She was amazed at her quick progress and said, "I am happy again, and it is all because of The Drake House.”
