LOCAL CHURCHES JOIN HOMEAID CARE DAY
Volunteers prepare affordable senior housing for new residents.
ATLANTA – April 1, 2024 – Building industry nonprofit HomeAid Atlanta provides Care Days, hands-on volunteer workdays, free-of-charge for nonprofits providing housing and services for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Members of Roswell’s Northview Church and Marietta’s North River Church of Christ joined a HomeAid Care Day on March 23 at Friendship Towers.
Volunteers tore up old carpet, completed deep cleaning tasks, painting, and plumbing fixes, and more in 13 apartment units, spanning nine floors of the building. The work of volunteers plus in-kind donations of materials, including 20 gallons of paint from Sherwin-Williams, provided a savings of over $11,000 for Friendship Towers. When final upgrades are complete, the apartments will be ready for new residents to call them home.
“Friendship Towers is an aging building and despite our efforts with maintenance over the years, there is a lot of work that still needs to be done for our wonderful residents. It means a lot to us that HomeAid Atlanta and these two churches spent all day Saturday volunteering with us to make improvements,” said Friendship Towers Board Member MC Moore, Jr.
Friendship Towers is a 102-unit apartment building that provides affordable housing for seniors in downtown Atlanta. According to October 2023 research from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, adults 65 and older are the fastest-growing age group experiencing homelessness. People aged 50 and over who are experiencing homelessness often have conditions associated with much older age such as memory loss, falls, and functional impairment.
“This Care Day was definitely a memorable one, getting apartments ready for seniors in need of affordable housing. Without these apartments, most of the residents would be back out on the street. The incredible efforts of these volunteers will help provide some dignity to our seniors who deserve a safe place to call home,” said Karen McLane, HomeAid Atlanta Director of Community Engagement.
HomeAid Atlanta is a nonprofit organization founded in 2001, with a mission to help people experiencing or at risk of homelessness build new lives through construction, community engagement, and education. HomeAid builds, renovates, and maintains facilities for nonprofits serving people experiencing homelessness. HomeAid has completed 200 construction projects at locations for victims of domestic violence, teen mothers, veterans and more, utilizing connections with building industry professionals and community organizations. HomeAid also provides essential items like diapers, wipes, and hygiene products to those affected by homelessness. HomeAid is the designated charity of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association.
