WHY the Essentials Drive?

An estimated 4,770 people in metro Atlanta experience homelessness on any given night and almost 35% are women and children. HomeAid recognizes how challenging it can be for families and individuals to provide for their most basic needs during times of crisis and transition. Babies can go through 8-12 diapers a day, and the average monthly cost of diapers for one child is $80. Families experiencing homelessness or economic hardship may have to improvise to make diapers last longer, changing diapers less often, or even attempt to clean and reuse disposable diapers.

Thanks to the support of metro Atlanta’s home building industry and generous community members, the Essentials Drive has collected more than 2.1 million baby items, assisting countless families since 2002.

Help us achieve our goal of 300,000 baby items this year!

Why the Essentials Drive?

“HomeAid’s donation of diapers and wipes has been critical for the many moms that we serve. We partner with a school for children experiencing homelessness, and many of the mothers have younger children in diapers. Most live in shelters or hotels and have little access to these resources. Those with income have difficulty covering all their expenses, so any free essential can mean the difference between choosing to buy diapers or see a doctor. Others have no income and often have to leave infants in dirty diapers as long as possible to make them last.”

Crossroads Community Ministries

“We send a sincere THANK YOU for the amazing items donated to DCM as part of the Essentials Drive! Year after year, HomeAid Atlanta and its supporters have continued to surpass our expectations and we consider HomeAid to be one of our greatest allies in the fight to alleviate homelessness in metro Atlanta.”

Decatur Cooperative Ministries

"It was like Christmas morning! The timing was perfect for this donation. We were out of Pull Ups and size 6 diapers and had several requests for them. The Essentials Drive donations allowed us to fill those requests. We were very low on wipes as well, so again perfect timing. We will be able to keep serving so many babies because of HomeAid Atlanta!”
